Media and News Literacy
Media and News literacy involves analyzing the reliability of news and information, and differentiating among facts, opinions and assertions in the media we consume, create and distribute. It is a necessary component for literacy in contemporary society.
Here are some important skills that we will work on together:
1. Identifying media bias and understanding how and when it can be useful or detrimental to us as consumers of information.
2. Recognizing types of misleading news that we may see on social media.
3. Identifying the source of information we consume as well as the factors that motivate that source.
4. Recognize our own habits that may lead to confirmation bias.
5. Welcoming cognitive dissonance in order to better understand more fully the issues in the news today.
